SPOTLIGHT SERIES — KAHUKU TOWN
If quiet beaches, adventure and ono local food are on your list of things to explore on Oahu, Kahuku is a place you’ll want to visit when on the North Shore. This quaint community is about a five minute drive from the well-known Turtle Bay Resort and about twenty-five minutes from Haleiwa. Yep, you guessed it — this month we’re spotlighting the charming town of Kahuku.
Kahuku was primarily known for being home to one of the island’s first sugar plantations and refineries. From 1893 to 1971 the sugar industry was the town’s leading source of income. The sugar mill closed in late 1971. Shortly after the sugar business ended, the Turtle Bay Resort opened, providing local residents new jobs close to home. Many of the original Turtle Bay employees are still working today. The town is packed with people who are proud of who they are and where they come from.
BEACHES
If we’re being honest, all of the North Shore is a beach. But if you’re looking for white sands and your own private shore, Malaekahana is your beach! This break is more than a mile long and great for body boarding, surfing and swimming. It’s important to note that Malaekahana does not have a lifeguard on duty and, like all beaches on Oahu, can sometimes hold a strong current. We suggest taking a bit to observe the surf before diving in.
ADVENTURE
Kahuku is home to Oahuʻs longest ziplines — you can expect ziplines ranging anywhere from 500 feet to nearly half a mile long. Keana Farms’ three-hour tour will deliver top-notch panoramic views of the North Shore all while your guide teaches about Hawaii’s rich culture and history. FOOD
If there’s one thing you must bring when visiting Kahuku, it’s your appetite! Kahuku is known for it’s plethora of flavorful food. You have got Kahuku Farms — the leading source of healthy and locally grown food, the Kahuku Superette — which some say has the tastiest ahi poke bowl on the island, and a cluster of some of the best food trucks on Oahu.
